We benchmarked our $7.95 VPS: 19 times faster disk than AWS

x19: faster disk than AWS, for a third of the price

Any provider can write “ultra-fast NVMe disks” on its website. What it cannot dress up is a benchmark you can run yourself. So we took our best-selling plan, the VPS Pro M (4 vCPU, 8 GB of RAM, 120 GB NVMe, $7.95 a month), ran YABS on it and compared the result with the competitors’ public runs on vpsbenchmarks.com.

How we measured it

YABS is an open script that measures disk, processor and network with standard tools (fio, Geekbench 6 and iperf3). It is what the community uses to compare providers, and the AWS, Google, OVH and other runs come from the same script.

We did not run it on an empty server. We used a VPS with the exact configuration of a customer Pro M, on a node with 36 customer VPS running at the same time, and Ubuntu 26.04, the same system as the OVH run we compare it with. We ran it twice and publish the best one, the same way public runs are done.

Disk: where the difference is

The number that matters most for a database, a WordPress site or an online store is 4k blocks: lots of small, scattered reads and writes. It is measured in IOPS (operations per second).

AWS Lightsail does 1,500 operations per second and Google Cloud 1,600: about 19 times fewer than the Pro M, which also costs a third. On large files the gap is wider: Lightsail reads 63 MB/s and the Pro M 2,220. On those clouds, disk performance is paid for separately. Several of these plans have half the cores and memory, and still cost 2 to 5 times more than the Pro M.

Against OVH and Contabo

OVHcloud VPS-2 2027$10.0020,0001,069
Contabo Cloud VPS 10€5.5015,0004,540

Against OVH, the Pro M does 47% more operations per second and reads twice as fast on large files, for less money and with 120 GB of disk instead of 75. One detail repeats in every public OVH VPS-2 run: the disk stops at exactly 20,000 IOPS, in the United States, Canada and France. That is a software cap. Ours has no cap.

Against Contabo we do almost twice the IOPS. Contabo is cheaper and reads faster on large files. If your project is storing and serving heavy files, it will serve you well there. If it is a database or a busy website, 4k is what you will feel.

Processor: in the same league

In Geekbench 6 the Pro M scores 802 single-core and 2,467 multi-core. AWS Lightsail, with 2 cores, scores 966 and 1,186: on multi-core the Pro M does twice as much. OVH VPS-2 scores 839 and 2,713; Contabo, 841 and 2,275. We are in the same group. Some providers have newer processors that do more per core, and cost several times more. If your workload is pure computation, like compiling or processing video, a plan with dedicated vCPU suits you better.

Network

We do not set a fixed limit per VPS: each server uses what the node gives, which is up to 10 Gbps inbound and 500 Mbps outbound. In the test, the Pro M reached about 475 Mbps outbound, against about 344 for OVH VPS-2 and about 176 for Contabo. To download an image, a backup or an update, inbound is what counts.

Only if someone keeps the network saturated for half an hour is their speed lowered for a while, so the rest do not pay for it. Almost nobody gets there: 95% of our VPS use less than 2 Mbps on average.

Outbound, the big providers like Hetzner, DigitalOcean or Linode give several Gbps per VPS. If your project is serving a lot of outbound traffic all day, like streaming or mass downloads for your users, those plans suit you better.

What we won’t tell you

We do not have the fastest disk on the market. Some providers with newer hardware do 45,000, 57,000 and even 92,000 IOPS at this plan size, at other prices. What we can show with numbers is that, for $7.95, the Pro M does more on disk than AWS, Google, OVH and Contabo.

One more clarification: our servers’ disks use an in-memory cache that speeds up repeated reads. Every customer benefits from it, but a very large database that does not fit in that cache will see somewhat lower numbers.

Try it yourself

SSH into any Linux VPS and run:

curl -sL https://yabs.sh | bash

It takes about 15 minutes. You can compare your result with ours on Geekbench and with the public runs from AWS Lightsail, OVH and Contabo. The exact number depends on the moment and the server load, but the order holds.

If you want to measure it on your own, create a VPS Pro M and in a few minutes you have root access to run the test.
