Windows VPS are now up to 10 times faster on disk

Over the last few weeks we rebuilt, from scratch, the images we use to install Windows on our VPS. We did not change the hardware or the plans, and we did not raise the price: we changed how Windows is prepared inside. The result is a VPS that reads up to 10 times faster and responds about 4 times sooner in everyday work.
What “up to 10 times” means
The 10 comes from sequential reads, which is what happens when you copy or open a large file: a backup, a database that loads in full or an installer. There we went from 345 MB/s to 3,376 MB/s, almost ten times more.
In daily use, what you notice most is something else: the small, scattered reads and writes Windows makes when opening programs, querying a database or serving several users over remote desktop. There the improvement is about 4 times, and that is the one you will feel.
| Test | Before | Now | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sequential read | 345 MB/s | 3,376 MB/s | almost x10 |
| Sequential write | 316 MB/s | 1,209 MB/s | x3.8 |
| Small random reads | 2,088 IOPS | 8,510 IOPS | x4 |
| Small random writes | 2,439 IOPS | 11,804 IOPS | x4.8 |
| Disk response time | 0.50 ms | 0.13 ms | almost 4 times lower |
The processor performs the same as before: the compression test gave the same result. What changed is the disk.
What changed for you
- A much faster disk. We redesigned the way Windows works with storage so it truly takes advantage of the server’s NVMe drives.
- Your data, better protected. When Windows saves something, it is really saved before moving on. Besides being faster, it takes better care of your information if power is lost.
- Windows tuned for a server. It comes configured to work as a virtual server, not as a desktop computer, and makes better use of the processor and the network.
- Up-to-date, leaner images. Every install ships with Windows updates applied and without leftover files, and you can shut down or restart your VPS cleanly from the panel.
- Drive C: grows on its own. If you upgrade your plan, Windows takes the new space on the next boot, with nothing for you to do.
How we measured it
We used DiskSpd, Microsoft’s disk benchmarking tool, with the same tests CrystalDiskMark runs. We compared two identical Windows Server 2019 machines on the same physical server: one with the previous image and one with the new one. The exact number on your VPS depends on the plan and the moment, but the gap between before and now holds.
Who gets it
- New VPS: every VPS created with Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025 already comes with the new image.
- Reinstalls: if you reinstall the system from your panel with any of those versions, you get it too. Keep in mind that reinstalling wipes the disk: make a copy first. Here is how to reinstall the operating system.
- If you already have a Windows VPS running: we are preparing a way to bring the upgrade to servers already in use without reinstalling or losing anything. When it is ready we will let you know before applying it to yours. It is free.
Same VPS, same price, now faster. If you want to try it, you can create a Windows VPS in a few minutes.
